Kelly has this amazing knack for selecting what to wear for family portraits. She is so talented at coordinating everyone together and over the years she has really done such an incredible job helping dress her family. I assume this is all Kelly’s work: she actually is a professional shopper! (Which I imagine for many is a dream job.) I love how this mint and coral work together. She finds the most perfect ways to bring the color palate into the whole family’s clothing.
Her daughter’s dress is the pattern that all of the other colors are pulling from. Patterns like this work great with kids, small scale patterns that are playful and colorful, but aren’t distracting from the portrait. Little Hayden stands in the middle pulling everyone in together. The coral color is repeated again in mom’s dress and both sister’s as well. Neutral color bases like white and kaki match in as a base for the men and any clothing pieces that are not a part of this bright color scheme. Mint is nearly a total compliment to the coral color, and this relationship pulls directly from the color wheel. Green lies opposite red and these two muted versions of this relationship feature this compliment perfectly.
I love where little details like teen Meghan’s necklace offering a bright pop of playful color and baby Hadley’s coral flowers in her hair fuzz. Kelly is even wearing a neutral necklace that matches Meghan’s tassel. Details like these really come through in their session!
This concept is easy to recreate for what to wear for family portraits of your own, with what ever colors work best for your family. Do you guys have stunning blue sparkler eyes? Rich dark ocean blue and warm golden colors are compliments as well and also are colors that really work well with the fall leaves. Deep colors also are great for fall, like a dark toned purple with emerald. If you have an adorable mini family member, pick something fun for them to wear, and then pull from those colors for the rest of you!!
